Israel Opposition Leaders Rally Behind Gadi Eisenkot as Netanyahu Faces Growing Pressure

Israel's opposition leaders are backing Gadi Eisenkot for prime minister as pressure mounts on Benjamin Netanyahu. Meanwhile, protests and vandalism outside Eisenkot's residence have intensified the political confrontation.

Political parties in Israel are increasingly rallying behind centrist alliance leader Gadi Eisenkot to form the country's next government, with several leaders urging President Isaac Herzog to invite the former army chief to take charge. The political developments have been accompanied by protests and vandalism outside Eisenkot's residence, where supporters of right-wing parties accused him of being responsible for the death of his son in Gaza.

The incident took place on Sunday night, when supporters of right-wing parties gathered outside Eisenkot's residence, raised slogans and vandalised property. The protesters blamed the former Israel Defence Forces chief for his son's death in Gaza.

According to ANI, BeYachad Party leader Naftali Bennett has said he will urge President Herzog to appoint Eisenkot, who heads the Yashar Party, as Israel's next prime minister.

Former Prime Minister Bennett said the people's electoral mandate must be respected and Eisenkot should be sworn in as prime minister without delay. He added that such a move would help put Israel back on the right path.

Avigdor Lieberman, leader of the Yisrael Beiteinu Party, has also recommended Eisenkot for the prime minister's post. According to The Times of Israel, Lieberman has completely ruled out the possibility of forming a coalition government under Benjamin Netanyahu's leadership.

Lieberman argued that most votes had been cast to remove Netanyahu from power and that the majority was opposed to him. He questioned how Netanyahu's leadership could be accepted when the anti-Netanyahu camp held the majority.

He also made his party's position clear, stating that it supports Eisenkot becoming prime minister and Yair Lapid being appointed Speaker of the Knesset.

Meanwhile, Democratic Party leader Yair Golan condemned the disturbance outside Eisenkot's residence. Visiting the former army chief's home, Golan criticised the protesters and said the incident reflected Netanyahu's character.

In a statement posted on X, Golan said those involved in the disturbance were Netanyahu supporters. He alleged that right-wing groups did not want anyone outside their political ideology to become prime minister. Golan also advised the Likud Party and other right-wing parties to maintain ethical boundaries in politics.

Golan has already expressed his support for Eisenkot's prime ministerial bid. Former Prime Minister Yair Bennett has also backed Eisenkot.

According to Reuters, the final decision now rests with President Herzog, who has been described as a mild-mannered leader. Herzog has called on political parties to enter parliament with open minds and open hearts, keeping the possibility of Netanyahu continuing in office open.

However, the political momentum appears to be moving against the incumbent prime minister. So far, no leader from any party outside Netanyahu's right-wing coalition has publicly announced support for his leadership.

With opposition leaders increasingly backing Eisenkot and tensions spilling onto the streets, the decision before President Herzog has become a crucial moment in determining the direction of Israel's next government.
